Many of the write-ups reference Football Outsiders stats, which are explained here. The most common is DVOA, or defense-adjusted value over average, which compares every play of the NFL season to a league average and adjusts based on situation and opponent.

Buffalo Bills
Biggest need: Pass-rusher
The Bills had the second-worst pass rush in the league by our adjusted sack rate metric. Then they released Mario Williams -- who tied for the team lead with 5.0 sacks last season and had 14.5 in 2014, when the Bills had the best ASR in the league -- and did not replace him in free agency.
Quiet need: Running back
The Bills had the second-best rush offense DVOA last year, but the overall numbers conceal an important split. In the 12 games LeSean McCoy played, they led the NFL in run DVOA at 15.7 percent above average. In the four games he missed, they were 11 percent below average, which would rank in the bottom 10. McCoy turns 28 in July and has more than 1,600 career carries. Karlos Williams was excellent as a rookie, but the Bills still need more help.
Not a need: Cornerback
Despite the lousy pass rush, the Bills were good against opponents' starting receivers, ranking in the top eight in DVOA against both WR1s and WR2s. Overall, the pass defense was just average, but that was a result of the lack of pressure and problems covering running backs. Ronald Darby and Stephon Gilmore make for a good starting CB pair, and Nickell Robey is a quality (and appropriate) nickelback.
