How Cam Newton can reach elite status

NFL

Is Cam Newton elite?

The question really depends on what one is referring to.

When it comes to endorsement power in the NFL, Newton might be second only to Peyton Manning, so he is elite in this sense.

In terms of physical talent, Newton has been quoted as saying, "Nobody has the size, nobody has the speed, nobody has the arm strength, nobody has the intangibles that I've had," and it is hard to argue with the gist of that assessment.

After signing a five-year, $103.8 million contract extension in June, Newton can also claim to be among the NFL's elite in terms of salary.

Where Newton cannot lay claim to being elite is on-field performance. His 56.9 Total QBR last season ranked 18th and is one of many statistical elements that indicate he's far from an upper-tier quarterback.

That might make it seem that Newton is, as NFL Nation TV put it, more "Scam" than Cam. But the truth of the matter is the Panthers' roster, or more specifically the terrible set of pass-catchers Carolina had last season, has held Newton back more than anything else.

The good news for Panthers fans is this: If Carolina's personnel upgrades at wide receiver pan out, Newton could close the elite on-field performance gap in a hurry.
