How Western berths will be won

The trade deadline is now in the rearview mirror, and the most engrossing storyline becomes the Western Conference playoff race.

While Anaheim, Nashville, St. Louis and Chicago each have more than 80 points and appear secure to clinch a postseason berth, six teams are battling for the four remaining spots (second and third in the Pacific Division, and the two wild-card berths).

With fewer than 20 games remaining for all of the eligible contestants, one key factor will play a role in whether each team will sneak into the big dance or get an early start to its offseason.

Calgary Flames

Current position: Tied for third in the Pacific Division
Key factor: Defensive group playing without Mark Giordano

Giordano was the front-runner for the Norris Trophy, and a Hart Trophy candidate, but now he is out for the season due to injury. Common sense says that is a big problem. Giordano was the offensive and defensive catalyst who propelled his team to overachieve this season.
