PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted right-hander Brandon Cumpton from the minors to start against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Pirates recalled Cumpton from Triple-A Indianapolis to pitch Thursday. Right-handed reliever Jared Hughes was optioned to Indianapolis.
Cumpton was 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three starts in Triple-A this season. The Pirates needed a starting pitcher after left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was put on the disabled list Monday because of inflammation in his left knee.
Hughes pitched once for the Pirates and got the win Monday night against the Reds by working one scoreless inning.
