Yankees claim OF Perez off waivers from Nationals
NEW YORK -- Outfielder Eury Perez has been claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees from the Washington Nationals.
Perez hit a combined .310 (75 for 242) with three minor league teams this year with 14 doubles, two homers and 15 RBIs. He had a .154 average in 22 games with the Nationals in 2012-13.
To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, left-hander Josh Outman was designated for assignment. Yankees manager Joe Girardi says that with expanded rosters, there was less of a need for situational relievers.
New York is set to break a club record Monday by using 57 players this season. Jose Pirela is in the starting lineup against the Baltimore Orioles, which would be his first appearance with the Yankees. Pirela was called up from Triple-A last Tuesday.
