Tigers scratch Ryan, start Wilson against Athletics
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Right-hander Alex Wilson is scheduled to make his first career start for the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday after Kyle Ryan was scratched.
Wilson, a right-hander who has worked strictly out of the bullpen in 56 games over two-plus seasons with the Tigers and Red Sox, has never gone longer than 3 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old has a 2.29 ERA in 12 appearances this season.
Detroit manager Brad Ausmus had penciled in Ryan -- who was pitching in the minors -- to start after Alfredo Simon was placed on the bereavement list following Tuesday night's game against Oakland. But Ryan was notified late and the Tigers were concerned he wouldn't arrive from Louisville in time to properly prepare for the game.
