SAN DIEGO -- Chargers wide receiver Vincent Brown missed another practice on Wednesday because of a sore calf.

Brown is hoping for a rebound season, but he hasn't taken a rep since straining his left calf on Friday, the Chargers' second day of camp.

"I'm just letting it rest and trying to get back as fast as I can," Brown said.

After a solid rookie season, Brown's career has stalled. He broke his left ankle in a 2012 preseason game and was sidelined for the year.

He returned last season, but not to everyone's expectations. He finished with 41 receptions for 472 yards and one touchdown.

"It was a new offense, I was just coming off an injury and I was trying to get my game back," Brown said. "It was definitely a tough year so I'm just trying to bounce back."

His rookie year opened some eyes. After being a third-round pick out of San Diego State, Brown had an impressive 17.3-yard average per catch on 19 receptions.

But his career was derailed when he snapped his ankle against the Packers and landed on injured-reserve. By the time he returned in 2013, it was in a new system under a new head coach in Mike McCoy.

With the disappointment last year brought, Brown studied his game intently in the offseason. He saw someone needing to tighten his routes and pay more attention to his technique.

"It was tough being away the whole 2012 season," he said. "I wasn't the same last year and I'm just trying to get back to the tempo with these guys out there."

It's a receiving unit that is getting deep, with Malcom Floyd returning from a neck injury and seventh-round pick Tevin Reese playing well.

But all Brown can do is watch.

"He's another talented receiver that knows what to do in our system," McCoy said of Brown. "He had a great offseason, unfortunately he is a little dinged up. But he's had year in the system now so he knows what to do and it's just a matter of him getting back on the field."

Brown's injury isn't considered serious, although he said he doesn't know when he'll return. He listed himself as day-to-day and it came with an anxious shrug.

"It's definitely tough," Brown said. "But there is nothing I can do but get back as fast as I can."
