Stephen Roberts accused of eluding police, carrying pistol without permit

Auburn defensive back Stephen Roberts was arrested Wednesday night on misdemeanor charges of attempting to elude law enforcement and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Auburn Police Capt. Lorenza Dorsey said Friday that the 20-year-old Roberts was a passenger in a vehicle during a traffic stop and attempted to flee from the officer. The arrest report shows Roberts was arrested at 9:53 p.m. CT and that the firearm was a handgun.

Roberts was booked at the Lee County Detention Center around 10:40 p.m., according to Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones.

There was a $1,000 bond on each charge, and Roberts was released Wednesday night for a total cost of $2,000. A court date has been set for Nov. 17 in Auburn municipal court.

"Gus [Malzahn] is aware," an Auburn spokesperson told ESPN. "He is gathering all of the facts and will handle the situation appropriately."

Roberts played in all 13 games for Auburn last year and started the last four. He finished the season with 26 tackles and three passes broken up. The junior is expected to play a major role for new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele this fall.

Roberts is the fifth Auburn player arrested this offseason. In May, sophomores Carlton Davis, Byron Cowart, Jeremiah Dinson and Ryan Davis were arrested on second-degree misdemeanor marijuana possession charges.

The punishment for those four players was handled internally, and none of the four will miss any playing time during the 2016 season.
