Tommy Tuberville opts against running for Alabama governor in 2018

Former Auburn Tigers coach Tommy Tuberville, after flirting with the idea of running for Alabama governor in 2018, on Tuesday said he has decided against it.

"It's been a long process, and I was doing it for the right purpose," Tuberville told Sirius XM Radio. "At the end of the day, I decided not to run."

Tuberville, 62, coached at Auburn from 1999 to 2008, compiling an 85-40 record with the Tigers before finishing his career at Texas Tech and Cincinnati. He's among the most successful coaches in Auburn history but spent part of his tenure at odds with the school's most powerful boosters.

He had said in February that he was discussing his political options with potential backers about entering an Alabama political arena wracked with turmoil following the resignation of Gov. Robert Bentley.

"I still want to coach," Tuberville told Sirius XM on Tuesday. "I want to stay in the business. It might coaching, it might be an athletic director, radio, TV ... anything that deals with football because that's what I've done my whole life. I want to be a part of it, I want to make the game better."
