Arizona's Allonzo Trier returning to school for junior season

Arizona's Allonzo Trier has decided to return to Tucson for his junior season, and told ESPN he won't even test the NBA draft process.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Trier averaged 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists, and shot 39 percent from beyond the arc despite missing the first half of the season.

"I have thought about it for a while, and I have decided to continue my education and basketball career at Arizona," Trier told ESPN. "Because of my relationship and faith in Coach (Sean) Miller, the coaching staff and my teammates, I will continue my original goal when I came here -- to help lead the team to a national championship."

"With my family's support, I am excited and confident about my decision," he added. "I also believe this will best prepare me for a long and successful NBA career."

Trier's return, along with a highly touted incoming freshman class that includes the No. 2 player in the country, 7-footer DeAndre Ayton, and three more Top 100 players, will give Miller and the Wildcats a team that could contend for the Final Four next season.

Trier played the final 18 games of the season after being suspended by the NCAA due to a failed PED test, and still managed to lead Arizona in scoring and put up career highs in points, rebounds and assists. He played in just 12 Pac-12 games, and was still voted as a second-team Pac-12 selection.

Trier will go into the season as a preseason first-team All-American and a National Player of the Year candidate.

Arizona will lose Lauri Markkanen and Kobi Simmons, who both declared for the NBA draft and will sign with agents. Rawle Alkins and Chance Comanche both announced they will declare without an agent to maintain their eligibility.

Trier's return is huge for an Arizona team that could have a starting lineup of Trier and senior Parker Jackson-Cartwright in the backcourt, Alkins and Dusan Ristic at the forward spots and Ayton in the middle.
