Braves lefty Matt Marksberry wakes from induced coma after seizure

MLB, Atlanta Braves

Atlanta Braves pitcher Matt Marksberry woke up out of a medically induced coma in an Orlando hospital as he begins to recover from a seizure and collapsed lung suffered while undergoing a colonoscopy Tuesday.

On Thursday afternoon, Marksberry's sister, Bridget, posted on Twitter that her brother was "starting to wake up. He still has a long journey ahead of him. My family and myself appreciate the love and support you have given us."

Marksberry, 26, went in for the colonoscopy procedure after not feeling well and experiencing stomach pains for nearly a week, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday. He was placed into a medically induced coma after he had a seizure and his lung collapsed during the procedure.

A Braves spokesman told the newspaper that Marksberry was being treated for "severe dehydration" and declined to elaborate on his condition or provide any further information, citing HIPAA regulations.

Marksberry provided an indication he was dealing with a potentially serious health issue with a tweet he posted on his account last Monday.

In two stints with the Braves this season, the 15th-round pick out of Campbell University threw 3â…“ innings with a 5.40 ERA in four appearances.
