JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell is satisfied with the explanation he got from running back Denard Robinson about the details of his one-car crash that resulted in his car ending up in a retention pond earlier this month.
Caldwell said Monday that he spoke with Robinson multiple times about the July 3 crash in Jacksonville and said he was reassured that Robinson did nothing wrong.
"My understanding is that the police officers did everything that they were supposed to do," Caldwell said. "I know it is under review, so I don't want to comment on that. Denard didn't do anything wrong, except for being out when he shouldn't have been out.
"I think that is a cautionary tale for a lot of our guys that at 3 or 4 in the morning, you leave yourself vulnerable for things to happen."
Jaguars veterans report for training camp Wednesday. The first practice is Thursday, and Robinson is expected to address the media then for the first time since the incident.
According to a police report and traffic camera video, Robinson's Chevy Impala slowly drove through an intersection on the wrong side of the road and ended up in a retention pond shortly after 4 a.m. on July 3.
Robinson was found asleep at the wheel while the car was slowly sinking in the pond. The 25-year-old Robinson and his passenger, 29-year-old Marissa O. Staples, were unhurt. However, police officers had to tell Robinson multiple times that the car was in the pond and convince him to leave, according to the police report.
According to the report, Officer M.T. Borgert screened Robinson for impairment and determined that Robinson was not impaired and should not be charged with driving under the influence. In addition, it was written on the police report that alcohol and drug tests were given.
Robinson was not cited at the time. However, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams on July 7 ordered an investigation into the actions of the officers who responded and Robinson was issued a citation for careless driving on July 14.
The investigation is still ongoing.
