Panthers sign safety Kurt Coleman to 3-year extension

NFL, Carolina Panthers

Panthers safety Kurt Coleman has signed a three-year extension, the team announced Wednesday.

Coleman's deal is worth $17 million with $7 million guaranteed, according to ESPN sources and multiple reports.

"It's a blessing," Coleman said in a statement released by the team. "When you go through situations, you want what's best for your family and what's best for the team, and I'm really excited. I'm fortunate to be a part of this team for three more years. Training camp is the beginning of a new season, and for me, now that this is out of the way, I am completely focused."

Coleman had a career-best seven interceptions in 2015.

Coleman, 28, and the Panthers reported to training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Wednesday.

Coleman was signed to a two-year, $2.8 million deal last year after he left the Kansas City Chiefs for free agency.

He spent one season with the Chiefs, where he led the team with three interceptions, and spent his previous four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played under Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott as a rookie in 2010.
