Jaguars release LB Bjoern Werner

NFL, Jacksonville Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars released former first-round draft pick Bjoern Werner on Monday morning as part of the team's cuts to reach the 75-man roster limit.

Werner was signed in May, roughly two months after he was released by the Indianapolis Colts, and given the chance to compete at the pass-rushing end spot the Jaguars call a leo.

Werner never climbed the depth chart and was stuck behind Dante Fowler Jr., the No. 3 overall pick in 2015, and rookie third-round pick Yannick Ngakoue.

The Jaguars opted to keep rookie Tyrone Holmes, their sixth-round pick, over Werner.

Werner, the 24th overall pick in 2013, was cut by the Colts in March after never living up to expectations coming out of Florida State. He recorded just 6.5 sacks in 38 games.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Werner started only one game as a rookie and recorded 2.5 sacks. He had 4.0 sacks in 15 starts in 2014, but he dropped out of the starting lineup in 2015 and didn't have a sack in 10 games.
