Bucs promote WR Josh Huff to replace injured WR Cecil Shorts III

NFL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Buccaneers promoted former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Josh Huff to the active roster, the team announced Tuesday.

He takes the place of receiver Cecil Shorts III, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Chargers and was officially placed on injured reserve.

Huff signed a two-year contract with his promotion, a source told ESPN's Adam Caplan.

A third-round draft pick in 2014, Huff was waived by the Eagles on Nov. 3 following an arrest for gun and marijuana charges.

He was pulled over on the New Jersey side of the Walt Whitman Bridge for speeding, and police found an unloaded 9 mm hand gun that was not registered to Huff, hollow-point ammunition and a small amount of marijuana.

Huff is eager for a fresh start and to show people there's more to him than his mistake that cost him his spot with the Eagles.

"It's definitely tough being in the situation that I'm in, but I know I put myself in that situation and I'm OK with it," Huff said recently. "I'm a good guy. Once you get to know me, you'll love me for me. I'm not a troubled guy at all."

Huff signed with the Bucs practice squad on Nov. 7. The team had considered bringing him up onto 53-man roster sooner, but a hamstring injury during a practice in Week 11 delayed that process.

"The chemistry is coming along good with Jameis (Winston)," Huff said. "Every day I'm staying after practice to work on some type of chemistry, some type of routes. I think I'm doing a great job so far with it. He's starting to trust me. I just can't wait to get into action."

The Bucs receiving corps took a major hit when Shorts and slot receiver Adam Humphries both left the game Sunday. Humphries is currently in the league's concussion protocol.

The team also re-signed receiver Bernard Reedy, who spent nearly the entire offseason, training camp and preseason with the Bucs, to the practice squad.
