Broncos comfortable with Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch as top 2 QBs

NFL, Denver Broncos

PHOENIX -- With Tony Romo's future still unresolved, Denver Broncos coach Vance Joseph and general manager John Elway emphasized Monday that they're comfortable going into the 2017 season with the quarterbacks they have currently on the roster.

"We've got two young quarterbacks that we feel really good about," Joseph said at the owners meetings. "One played a bunch of ball last year in Trevor [Siemian], and Paxton [Lynch] is a first-round pick for a reason. He is a talented guy that's got a bright future. It may be now. It may be a year from now. But we have two young guys that we feel really good about."

Siemian, a third-round pick of the team in 2015, started 14 games for the Broncos last season, throwing 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He finished 21st in Total QBR (55.8).

Lynch, who was selected by the Broncos in the first round (26th overall) last year, started two games, completing 49 of 83 passes for 497 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

"I've said it 10 times. This team won nine games last year with two rookie quarterbacks," Joseph said. "And probably could have won 10 or 11. So we feel strong about our two young guys. They're both good guys. Their teammates like playing for them. It's going to be a spirited competition. I'm looking forward to it. Whoever wins the job wins the job. And whoever's the backup, guess what? He's going to be better for it. Our future at quarterback is better than most. We've got two young guys that can play that are young guys. So moving forward in the future here, we're going to be in good shape at quarterback."

Elway was asked if he'd had any discussions about Romo at the meetings.

"Nope. Same old thing. He's still under contract for the Cowboys," Elway said.

"Like we've said, we really feel good about the two young ones that we have. Trevor did a good job for us last year. Paxton was young. So the plan is to stay the course there and see what's available in the draft. So we'll go from there. But we like both, and Paxton was a first-rounder last year for a reason. And then Trevor came in and played very well. So it'll be a great competition between them in the spring."
