Canada will have to do without the second-leading NHL point producer from last season when the World Cup of Hockey tournament begins Sept. 17, as Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn is out of the tournament recovering from offseason surgery.
But Canada's depth of talent is so great that it has replaced Benn with the leading point producer in the playoffs: San Jose Sharks winger Logan Couture.
Benn, 27, was second to scoring champion Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks with 89 points last season. Benn was third in the league with 41 goals. The Stars' captain underwent offseason surgery to correct a core muscle injury.
He had expected to be fully recovered in time for the start of the tournament in mid-September.
Benn won an Olympic gold medal with Canada in Sochi in 2014.
Couture, 27, led all playoff performers with 30 points as his San Jose Sharks were defeated in six games in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
