Brent Burns, Sharks agree to eight-year extension

NHL, San Jose Sharks

The biggest name in next summer's free-agent class has taken himself off the market.

Pending unrestricted free agent Brent Burns and the San Jose Sharks agreed to an eight-year extension Tuesday, the team announced.

Financial terms weren't revealed, but the deal is worth $64 million total, according to a source. The contract is front-loaded, including signing bonuses. The deal does not include a full no-move clause but does have limited no-trade provisions.

"Brent is one the most dynamic players in the National Hockey League and we're very excited to get this deal done," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. "He has worked extremely hard to be an elite defenseman and at six-foot-five, 230-pounds, his abilities on this ice are unique and rare."

The 31-year-old led all NHL blueliners with 27 goals last season and was one of three finalists for the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top defenseman.

He leads the Sharks this season with seven goals and has nine assists in 19 games.
