Red Wings' Gustav Nyquist to have in-person hearing for high sticking

NHL, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild

Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist will have an in-person hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety after he high-sticked Jared Spurgeon of the Minnesota Wild in the face Sunday.

Nyquist appeared agitated by Spurgeon's attempt to cross-check him in the back along the boards, and he retaliated by shoving his stick blade in Spurgeon's face.

Nyquist was assessed a four-minute double minor penalty for his actions, but was not ejected. Spurgeon left the game briefly but returned.

"[The officials] didn't see it from the same angle I did," Wild coach Bruce Boudreau said. "They didn't think it was that bad. I said, 'Well, watch the replay. You'll see it deserved more than a double minor.'"

Nyquist, 27, doesn't have a prior record of discipline with the Department of Player Safety. After the game, the Swede said his high stick was not intentional.

No date or time has been announced for Nyquist's hearing, but the Red Wings' third-leading scorer could face a suspension of five or more games.

Nyquist and Spurgeon each had an assist in the Wild's 6-3 win over the Red Wings.
