Chicharito injures collarbone vs. Honduras, will miss Gold Cup

HOUSTON -- Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez will miss Mexico's Gold Cup campaign after sustaining an injury during the first half of Wednesday's friendly versus Honduras.

The 27-year-old striker suffered a fractured collarbone and was taken to hospital on Wednesday night for further evaluation. He will be out four weeks, according to miseleccion.mx.

"The fracture of the right collarbone has been confirmed clinically," said Mexico team doctor Gerardo Aguilar after the game.

"He's being re-evaluated in hospital to confirm what we observed in a radiological study."

"[He'll be out] for three to four weeks minimum."

The injury occurred in the 40th minute when Hernandez collided with Honduras defender Brayan Beckeles. Hernandez immediately signaled for medical assistance and was replaced by Oribe Peralta.

Mexico's first Gold Cup match is scheduled for July 9 against Cuba in Chicago.

If ruled out, Hernandez would join defender Hector Moreno, who broke his left leg in a 2-2 draw Costa Rica on June 27, as injury scratches for the Gold Cup.

"It's hard, it could have happened to anyone, but it's Chicharito and we know what that means, he is our scorer, he is our top player," Andres Guardado told ESPN's John Sutcliffe after the match. "It is a big loss. Now as a team we must regroup and be stronger.

"This gives us extra motivation and we must dedicate this effort to our teammate like him and Hector Moreno, and unfortunately this is not the first time something like this has happened to us."
