David Beckham, Miami Hurricanes to meet about new joint stadium - report

David Beckham will meet with University of Miami president Donna Shalala on Friday about a possible deal for building a new stadium, according to the Miami Herald.

The proposed stadium would be built to accommodate both Miami Hurricanes football and Beckham's new Major League Soccer franchise, according to the newspaper.

Beckham's ownership group has spent more than a year trying to find a site to place the new MLS team, with little help from municipal officials.

Miami Beckham United confirmed to ESPN FC that its representatives are meeting with Shalala, mayor Carlos Gimenez, and MLS commissioner Don Garber.

"David, Marcelo [Claure] and Simon [Fuller] are making progress toward bringing an MLS club to Miami-Dade County," Miami Beckham United said in a statement. "We're in the process of identifying viable sites and are entertaining a number of options. We look forward to sharing positive news with our fans soon."

Miami football has played at Sun Life Stadium -- also the home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins -- since 2008, when the Orange Bowl was demolished, but Shalala has said the team would benefit from a 40,000-seat stadium close to campus.

Information from ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle was used in this report.
